John Legend Is Not F*cking Around With His Outerwear Game

You may have notice that we're doing some serious outerwear recon out here. And with good reason, we're in for a messy winter ahead. (We can't help but think that Winter Is Coming has gone from a GoT tagline to, well an indictment for our nation and possibly all of humanity — fun!)

Anyway, if you're looking for ideas, we'd usually direct you to a large swath of different actors/musicians/athletes killing it on the outerwear front, but why do all that work when we have John Legend, living up to his name and nailing the coat game not once but twice yesterday in the cold(ish) streets of New York City.

First off, the singer landed at JFK yesterday and deplaned in a quilted leather jacket from Balmain, one that costs a whopping $5,245 on Mr Porter (hey, holidays are coming!). And while the leather coat, with its gold buttons and ribbed knit collar and cuffs, is luxe, it's anything but flashy, which is a nice look for, you know, hopping off a transatlantic flight.

But Legend knows that when the sun sets you can get away with something with a little more built-in swagger, which he did with a military coat from GQ gawd Dries Van Noten, that features some look-the-f*ck-at-me military-inspired gold embellishments, which is going for a healthy $6,839 at the hip boutique Totokaelo. Yes, that means that Legend wore more than $10,000 of outerwear alone yesterday. #Blessed

What really stands out here, though, is that Legend knew that the coats were going to be the starring players, and dressed accordingly—meaning he topped off black-on-black, low-key looks with some eye-catching jackets. And the man knows versatility is key, and that all coats don't work for all occasions. Sometimes, during the day, you gotta maintain a low profile, but at night, when your wife and the mother of your children is stepping up her game, you gotta do the same. Let that be a lesson: not all jackets are created the same, no matter their price.
